Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
Provides safe water, dignified sanitation, and hygiene services that protect the health and safety of women and children.
WCCO treats water and sanitation as the foundation of health, education, and protection. Where safe water is scarce, families ration what they drink, children miss school to fetch water, waterborne disease spreads, and women and girls face protection risks at shared or unlit facilities. Through this program, we deliver WASH services in displacement sites, returnee settlements, and drought-affected rural communities — combining emergency response with systems built to last.
Our WASH program includes
Water supply infrastructure
Drilling, rehabilitation and solarisation of boreholes and shallow wells, and construction of berkads and storage tanks
Emergency water provision
Through water trucking and voucher-based supply during drought and displacement crises
Safe and dignified sanitation
Gender-segregated, lockable and disability-accessible latrines, bathing shelters and handwashing stations
Hygiene promotion and AWD/cholera prevention
Through community education, house-to-house sessions and school hygiene clubs
Water quality assurance
Including routine testing, chlorination and household water treatment support
Community WASH committees
Trained, women-represented, and responsible for tariffs, maintenance and long-term operation
By investing in WASH, WCCO aims to reduce waterborne disease, keep girls in school, ease the protection risks women face in fetching water, and leave behind water systems that communities can operate, repair, and rely on long after a project ends.
