Climate Resilience & Adaptation
Strengthens community resilience to climate shocks through early warning systems, climate-smart agriculture, and disaster risk reduction.
Somalia is among the countries most severely affected by climate change, facing recurring droughts, seasonal flooding, erratic rainfall, and increasing competition over scarce natural resources. These climate shocks repeatedly displace communities, destroy livelihoods, and deepen existing vulnerabilities among women, children, and marginalized groups. WCCO works directly with at-risk communities to strengthen their capacity to withstand, adapt to, and recover from these climate-related shocks.
What we do
Climate-Smart Agriculture & Water Management
We support farming and pastoral communities to adopt drought-resistant crops, efficient irrigation techniques, and sustainable water harvesting methods, reducing dependency on unpredictable rainfall and protecting food security.
Early Warning & Disaster Risk Reduction
WCCO helps establish community-based early warning systems for droughts and floods, paired with preparedness training that allows communities to act before a crisis escalates rather than only responding after disaster strikes.
Community-Based Natural Resource Management
We work with local leaders and community structures to manage shared resources — water points, grazing land, and forests — in ways that reduce resource-based conflict and support long-term environmental sustainability.
Support for Climate-Displaced Populations
When droughts or floods force families from their homes, WCCO provides emergency assistance alongside longer-term support to help displaced households rebuild sustainable livelihoods in their new locations.
Community Awareness & Capacity Building
We conduct training and awareness sessions to help communities understand climate risks and adopt practical adaptation strategies, ensuring that resilience-building is community-led and sustainable beyond the life of any single project.
Our approach
WCCO integrates climate resilience into a broader humanitarian and development framework — linking this program with our work in Water & Sanitation, Livelihood Programs, and Emergency Response — to ensure that communities are not only supported during crises, but are also better equipped to prevent and withstand future shocks.
