Shelter and Non-Food Items (NFI)
Provides emergency shelter, essential household items, and displacement data that protect the dignity and safety of families who have lost their homes.
WCCO responds to the first and hardest stage of displacement. Families uprooted by conflict, flooding or drought arrive at a new site with nothing — no roof, no bedding, no cooking pots, no privacy. Women and girls sleep in open or shared spaces, households cook and eat where they sleep, and the loss of assets pushes families into debt within weeks. Through this program, we deliver shelter and household support to displaced people, returnees and host communities, and we gather the displacement data that guides the wider humanitarian response.
Our shelter and NFI program includes
Emergency shelter
Distribution of shelter kits, tarpaulins and construction materials in the immediate aftermath of displacement
Transitional shelter construction and repair
For families living in protracted displacement
Household non-food items
Kitchen sets, blankets, sleeping mats, jerrycans and solar lanterns for newly displaced households
Dignity kits for women and girls
Including menstrual hygiene materials and culturally appropriate clothing
IDP profiling and site assessments
That map displacement patterns, household vulnerability and unmet needs
Targeting and verification
Through community committees, with clear vulnerability criteria and post-distribution monitoring
Cluster coordination
Working with Shelter, CCCM and NFI partners and district authorities in every site where we operate
By delivering shelter and household items quickly and to the right families, WCCO reduces the protection risks that follow displacement, restores privacy and dignity to households in collective sites, and gives families a stable base from which to rebuild their livelihoods.
